Compound fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as primary nutrients, meeting a wide range of crop needs. Phosphate fertilizers primarily provide phosphorus, which is crucial for root development, fruit maturation, and improving resistance to diseases.
As spring plowing season arrives, the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation has issued a consumer alert regarding fertilizer purchases to protect farmers' interests. Here are key points to keep in mind when selecting and using fertilizers:
1. Choose Official Channels
Purchase fertilizers from reputable dealers or specialized agricultural supply stores. Avoid unlicensed vendors or unauthorized sellers. Beware of roaming salespeople using "high-tech product" marketing gimmicks. Official channels provide better product quality assurance. Always ask for a product quality certificate or third-party test report, and be sure to collect and keep the invoice, packaging, and user manuals—these are vital for protecting your rights in case of disputes.
2. Check Packaging Labels
According to the national mandatory standard GB 18382-2021, fertilizer labels must include:
Fertilizer name
Nutrient content
Applicable standard
Production license or registration number
Net weight
Instructions and warnings
Manufacturer name and address
Production date or batch number (imported products must list registration number)
Pay special attention to:
Fertilizer Name: Must conform to national naming standards (see Table 1), and should not contain exaggerated phrases such as “high-efficiency,” “ultra-effective,” “all-nutrient,” “stress-resistant,” or “powerful.”
Net Content: Must be clearly indicated as a single value and match the actual content. Avoid split labeling.
Nutrient Content (Formulated): Compound and blended fertilizers must show the N-P₂O₅-K₂O ratio, with total nutrients equaling the sum of individual nutrients. If minor or trace elements are listed, their names and concentrations must be included.
Applicable Standards: National or industry standards must be marked. If only enterprise standards are shown, verify their relevance.
Production License Number: Compound and phosphate fertilizers are regulated and their licenses can be checked through the National Industrial Product License Public Information System.
3. Assess Physical Quality
Avoid buying if the package is poorly sealed or appears tampered with. Check that the quality certificate is complete and authentic. Use these physical traits to judge quality:
High-quality compound fertilizers: Uniform granules, smooth surface
Fake or low-quality fertilizers: Uneven sizes, rough texture
Fertilizer color and smell can also help in identifying quality.
4. Safe Transport and Storage
Pre-transport Check: Ensure packaging is intact with no leaks.
Classified Storage: Different types of fertilizers must be stored separately to avoid chemical reactions.
Moisture and Ventilation: Keep fertilizers in dry, well-ventilated areas to maintain effectiveness.
Fire and Explosion Prevention: Fertilizers like ammonium nitrate are flammable or explosive; keep them away from fire and heat sources.
