The Ministry of Natural Resources announced today (10th) the confirmation of a new mineral species—high-purity quartz ore—in its New Mineral Discoveries Bulletin. This breakthrough promises to end China’s heavy reliance on imports and propel high-quality development in strategic industries like semiconductors and photovoltaics.

What is High-Purity Quartz Ore?
Defined as rock yielding ≥99.995% silicon dioxide purity after processing, high-purity quartz meets stringent standards for cutting-edge applications. Recent exploration campaigns in Henan’s East Qinling and Xinjiang’s Altay regions have uncovered multiple deposits. Collaborative R&D by Chinese enterprises and institutions has achieved pilot production of 4N5-grade materials, with some samples reaching 4N8-grade purity. Innovations in resource evaluation, deep purification, and targeted impurity removal mark critical progress toward domestic high-purity quartz sand industrialization.

Academician Mao Jingwen of the Chinese Academy of Engineering highlighted: “This discovery strengthens industrial chain resilience and fosters new productive forces. As a globally scarce resource vital for semiconductors and photovoltaics, high-purity quartz’s heat resistance, low thermal expansion, and optical clarity are irreplaceable in high-tech sectors.”
Next Steps
Huang Xuexiong, Director of Mineral Resources Protection and Supervision, outlined plans: “We will classify high-purity quartz as a strategic mineral, establish dedicated R&D centers, and launch nationwide surveys. Focus areas include advanced separation technologies and key exploration projects to boost domestic supply.”
