Top 10 Uses of Quartz Sand Across Industries: Applications & Benefits

2025-04-22

Quartz sand is a durable, wear-resistant, and chemically stable silica mineral, with its main chemical composition being SiO₂. It appears white or colorless and transparent, has a hardness of 7, is brittle with no obvious cleavage, and its fracture surface is shell-like. It has a glass-like luster and a density of about 2.65. The bulk density varies, ranging from 1.6-1.8 for 1-20 mesh, and around 1.5 for 20-200 mesh.

With significant anisotropy in its chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties, quartz sand is insoluble in most acids, slightly soluble in potassium hydroxide solutions, and has a melting point of around 1750 °C. Its unique physical and chemical characteristics make it a crucial material in industries like aerospace, electronics, mechanical manufacturing, and the rapidly growing IT sector.

Especially due to its molecular structure, crystal form, and lattice variations, quartz sand boasts high temperature resistance, low thermal expansion, excellent insulation, corrosion resistance, piezoelectric and resonant effects, and unique optical properties. This has made it an essential component in the development and manufacturing of high-tech products.

3. Metallurgy:
Quartz sand is an essential raw material or additive for silicon metal, ferrosilicon, and silicon-aluminum alloys. It also serves as a blasting and sandblasting material for metal surface rust removal.

4. Construction Industry:
Quartz sand is applied in concrete, cementitious materials, road-building materials, artificial marble, cement physical testing materials (standard cement sand), and magnesium alloy manhole covers.

5. Chemical Industry:
Quartz sand is a raw material for the production of silicon compounds and water glass. It is also used as filler for sulfuric acid towers and is a source of amorphous silica micro-powder.

6. Mechanical Manufacturing:
It is a critical material for foundry sand and is an important component in grinding materials, such as sandblasting, hard polishing paper, sandpaper, and sand cloth.
